Endotracheal Tubes Industry Analysis, Demand, Growth, Opportunities, Technology, Segmentation and Forecast To 2016

The global endotracheal tube is expected to exhibit a CAGR exceeding 12.5% and reach around USD 312 million by 2018. The endotracheal tubes (ETTs) are flexible plastic tubes that are inserted in the mouth and down the airway or trachea. This device is used to maintain an open airway and assist in the delivery of anesthetic gas, medicine, or oxygen to the patient.

The ETTs support the patients to breathing during heart failure, collapsed lung, pneumonia, and emphysema. It also protects the lungs for patients who are at a risk of breathing in fluids and are unable to protect their airway. For instance people suffering from overdose, strokes, or bleeding from the stomach or esophagus.

Risks of using these intubations include lung collapse, infection, cuff perforation, tracheal mucosal necrosis, bleeding, stenosis, or trauma to the larynx (voice box), vocal cords, trachea, esophagus, thyroid gland. The endotracheal tubes market is fragmented into source and types.

On the basis of source, these tubes are single use tubes, made from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The ETTs have a left-facing bevel at the tip with a Murphy eye.

Left-facing bevel is preferred than a right facing one, as it allows the tip to pass easily through the vocal chords. These tubes are usually placed with a right hand in a right-to-left direction towards the larynx. The Murphy eye helps to provide an alternate gas passage in case of emergency. However, some are also made from stainless steel, silicone, latex rubber, or rubber.

The ETTs types are classified into a nasal endotracheal, oral tracheal tube, cuffed, and uncuffed. The nasal endotracheal tubes represent around 65% of the global endotracheal tube market, while the oral represent 35%.

Most of these tubes have inflatable cuffs to seal the bronchial tree and trachea off gastric contents, air leakage, blood, secretions, and other fluids. Uncuffed tubes are mostly used for pediatric use.

These tubes range from 2 to 10.5 millimeters (mm) in diameter. Smaller tubes are used for neonatal and pediatric patients. 6 mm tubes usually have an inflatable cuff.

The key market players of the global endotracheal tubes market are Well Lead Medical Company Limited, Teleflex Incorporated, Covidien Ltd.
